ITER is worth building even if the timeline is frustrating. the physics we learn matters. Q>10 has never been demonstrated at this scale. the plasma diagnostics data alone will be foundational for every commercial fusion design that follows. you don't skip experiments because they take a long time. just don't expect commercial fusion by 2040. the gap between ITER proving the physics and a grid-connected commercial plant is roughly the same as the gap between a wind tunnel test and a commercial aircraft. significant engineering remains. what I'm actually watching is CFS's SPARC. if the HTS magnet approach holds up, the commercialization path looks meaningfully shorter than the ITER roadmap implies.
