Time-of-flight LiDAR gives you position. FMCW gives you position and instantaneous radial velocity in a single measurement cycle. That's not a minor feature — it means you can distinguish a stationary object from a moving one without multi-frame tracking latency. For a vehicle traveling at highway speed where response time matters, that's a real capability difference. The coverage on solid-state LiDAR tends to focus on cost, but the FMCW velocity measurement capability is arguably the more interesting engineering advance for safety-critical applications.
