The gap between demo videos and factory deployment reality is still significant. Boston Dynamics, Figure, Tesla Optimus — they all have compelling demos. What I want to see is unscripted operation in genuinely messy environments. Manipulation of varied objects (not identical widgets in controlled staging) is where current systems still struggle. The object recognition is fine; the grasping under real variance in orientation, surface texture, and weight distribution is the hard part. BMW's Figure deployment and Tesla's Optimus factory trial are worth watching specifically because they're testing this in conditions that aren't optimized for demo performance. The honest question: are current systems augmenting human workers or replacing specific task categories? The answer appears to be narrow task replacement in structured environments — not the generalist automation the headlines imply.
