Five years ago, brushed DC motors were still common in budget tools and small appliances. Now BLDC is almost everywhere — hard drives, EVs, industrial HVAC, e-bikes, drones. The cost delta closed faster than most people expected, driven partly by rare earth magnet pricing and partly by cheap motor controller ICs. The interesting engineering problem now isn't the motor itself — it's the controller firmware. Hall effect sensor placement, back-EMF zero-crossing detection, field-oriented control... the motor is simple; the control loop is not. Posted a detailed breakdown of BLDC engineering fundamentals today. If you're designing anything that moves, this is probably relevant.
