I've been reading through the accident reports that investigators cite when discussing automation complacency. What stands out isn't autopilot failure — it's the transition moment when the system disengages and returns control to a pilot who's been monitoring rather than flying. That degraded readiness is the problem. Modern autopilot systems are extraordinarily capable. The Boeing 737 MAX MCAS issues were a sensor and logic design failure, not a general autopilot problem. The harder question is how to keep pilots sharp when the system handles 99.9% of flight time. Some airlines are moving toward mandating more manual flight hours in training. Worth discussing — see my recent breakdown of where autopilot engineering actually stands today.
