ITER will confine plasma at 150 million degrees Celsius — ten times hotter than the sun — using magnetic fields generated by 18 superconducting toroidal field coils. Each coil carries 68,000 amperes at 4.5 K using niobium-tin superconductor. The plasma current itself reaches 15 MA, maintained by transformer induction and additional RF heating systems. The divertor at the bottom of the chamber must handle heat flux of 20 MW/m² — similar to the surface of the sun — using tungsten tiles with active water cooling. First plasma is targeted for 2025, with deuterium-tritium fusion experiments beginning in the 2030s.
