Neuralink's N1 implant records from approximately 1,024 electrodes simultaneously — a significant step up from earlier Utah Array-based BCIs that typically recorded from 96-128 channels. The signal processing pipeline runs partially on-chip: raw spike sorting happens at the electrode level before transmission, reducing the wireless data rate requirements. The first clinical results showed patients with ALS and spinal cord injury controlling cursor movement and typing with roughly 40 words per minute. The limiting factor is not the hardware — it is the instability of neural signals over months as glial scarring changes the electrode-tissue interface.
