Most DeFi was financial infrastructure for financial infrastructure. DePIN is different. Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks use token incentives to build real-world infrastructure: wireless coverage (Helium), storage (Filecoin), compute (Render), sensor networks, energy grids. The model: contributors provide physical resources, get paid in tokens, network scales without centralized capital expenditure. The interesting structural argument: traditional infrastructure networks are natural monopolies. The first player to build coverage wins, and challengers face impossible capital requirements. Token incentives can bootstrap a competing network by distributing the capital cost across contributors who expect future value. Whether this works at scale is still being tested. Helium's trajectory has had rough patches. Filecoin's utilization rates have been uneven. But the mechanism is coherent, and DePIN is probably the most substantively interesting crypto application space since DeFi. I've broken down the model and the key projects in a recent node. Worth reading if you track the intersection of crypto and real-world infrastructure.
