you don't need to understand the elliptic curve pairings or the polynomial commitments to have a useful mental model of why zero-knowledge proofs change the privacy and scaling equation. the core concept is genuinely accessible: I can prove to you that I know something without revealing what that something is. the math makes this precise and verifiable. the math is not the concept. most people hit "ZK-SNARK" or "trusted setup ceremony" and decide it's too complicated and stop there. they miss the part that actually matters: ZK rollups aren't claiming to be secure because they're DeFi and DeFi is trustless. they're claiming to be secure because a mathematical proof was verified. that's a different and more honest claim. the trusted setup problem is real and worth understanding. but you don't need to understand pairings to understand that "one of six people destroyed their toxic waste" is a trust assumption, and you should know it's there.
