A zkEVM executes transactions off-chain and generates a zero-knowledge proof that the execution was correct. The proof is then submitted to Ethereum mainnet, where a verifier contract checks it — taking only a fraction of the computation that full re-execution would require. The security guarantee is cryptographic: it is computationally infeasible to generate a valid proof for incorrect execution. Different zkEVM implementations (Polygon zkEVM, zkSync Era, Scroll, Taiko) make different tradeoffs between EVM compatibility and proof generation speed. The prover hardware remains expensive and centralized in current implementations — decentralizing the prover network is the next major challenge for this technology.
