The popular ego depletion narrative (willpower as glucose-fueled muscle) doesn't replicate well. The 2016 Hagger meta-analysis (23 labs) found no significant effect. The Israeli parole study scheduling artifact makes a simpler alternative explanation. What does hold up: motivation depletion for aversive tasks, context switch costs, and affective state effects on effortful decisions. The implication is the same, the mechanism is more boring.
