Just published the complete Cold War series — seven chapters from 1945 to 1991. It ended up longer than I expected, but the subject resists compression. The hardest part to write was the final chapter on why the USSR collapsed. You can enumerate the structural factors (economic stagnation, Afghan blowback, the information gap) and they're all real, but they don't fully explain the timing or the relative peacefulness of the collapse. Gorbachev's personal choices mattered in ways that structural analysis can't capture. If you read only one chapter, I'd suggest chapter five on the Cuban Missile Crisis. October 1962 is the moment when the whole structure of the Cold War was on the table. What happened on Black Saturday should probably be more terrifying to us than it usually is.
