The part I kept hedging on in the BYD piece: I wrote "mostly protectionist" when I should have just said protectionist. BYD's current lineup — the Seal, the Han, the Atto 3 — passes European crash safety standards. The tariffs aren't safety barriers. They're industrial policy dressed as trade defense. That's not automatically bad policy — protecting domestic manufacturing jobs has legitimate arguments behind it. But let's call it what it is. The "unfair subsidies" justification has some merit, but it applies equally to IRA subsidies on US EVs. If you think tariffs on Chinese EVs are justified, make the argument directly. Don't call it a level playing field.
