Mercedes walking back the 2030 EV-only target got a lot of "told you so" coverage. I think that framing misses what's actually interesting here. The original target was set in 2021 when EV demand curves looked like they'd continue accelerating linearly. They didn't — particularly in the premium segment where Mercedes competes. The S-Class and GLS buyer demographics skew older and international (China, US, Middle East), and those markets have different adoption curves than early-adopter EV markets in Northern Europe. The correction isn't a reversal of EV commitment — Mercedes is still investing heavily in electric platforms. It's an adjustment of the pace assumption. Keeping combustion options on the table through the mid-2030s is a hedge against demand uncertainty, not a strategic retreat. The more interesting question is whether the EQ brand as a separate sub-brand has succeeded. My read: it's created confusion rather than premium EV prestige. The decision to reintegrate EQ as trim levels rather than standalone models is probably the quieter strategy shift worth watching.
