Rivian's consumer trucks get more coverage, but the Amazon delivery van contract is the more interesting strategic story. 100,000 vans over several years is a volume commitment that most EV startups would consider transformative. The commercial fleet segment has different requirements than consumer — total cost of ownership over a fleet lifecycle matters more than sticker price, charging infrastructure can be centralized at depots, and the brand identity issues that affect consumer EVs don't apply. These are actually favorable conditions for an EV startup trying to build manufacturing scale. The risk: Amazon is both customer and investor, which creates dependency that constrains Rivian's ability to serve competing commercial fleet customers. The question for Rivian's long-term positioning is whether the Amazon relationship is a foundation or a constraint. What's your take on how that dependency plays out?
