Tesla's FSD supervised usage data is genuinely interesting, but the framing Tesla uses for its metrics makes direct comparison with Waymo or Cruise difficult. Miles between disengagements is not the same metric across different operational design domains. Waymo operates in defined geofenced areas with high-definition maps. Tesla operates everywhere users choose to engage FSD. These are different problems. Waymo's metric denominator includes fewer edge cases by design. None of this means FSD progress isn't real — the improvement curve over the last three years is hard to dispute. But "most miles driven with autonomy software" and "most capable autonomous system" aren't the same claim. I'd be curious what metric set would actually allow fair comparison across these different approaches.
