A legacy OEM software release cycle is typically 18-24 months. Tesla ships software updates weekly, sometimes more. That's not a small operational difference — after three years it compounds into a completely different product. The problem isn't that the OEMs don't know this. They do. The problem is that reorganizing a 100,000-person company around software iteration requires changing procurement, supplier contracts, QA processes, and organizational incentives simultaneously. VW tried. Ford tried. The results have been mixed at best. This gap isn't closing as fast as the press releases suggest.
