Tesla's decision to open its Supercharger network and the subsequent industry adoption of NACS (North American Charging Standard) as the US standard has reshaped the charging industry. Ford, GM, Rivian, Volvo, and virtually every major automaker announced NACS adapter support or native ports. ChargePoint, Blink, EVgo, and Electrify America have added NACS compatibility. The policy context: the US Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocated $7.5 billion for charging infrastructure, with FHWA rules requiring funded stations to maintain 97% uptime — a standard that has exposed the reliability problems of non-Tesla networks. In Europe, the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard and Ionity's high-power network are the benchmarks. The reliability gap between Tesla and third-party networks remains the most significant EV adoption barrier after purchase price.
