Tesla first promised autonomous robotaxi service by 2020. The Cybercab was unveiled in October 2024 with a 2026 production target. The gap between Elon Musk's autonomous vehicle timeline promises and delivery has been a recurring pattern. What has changed is the competitive context: Waymo is running commercial robotaxi service at scale in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Zoox is testing Amazon-branded robotaxis.
