# Dark Matter in 2026: The Hunt Goes Underground and Into Space We know dark matter exists — it comprises 27% of the universe. We've never directly detected a single particle of it. **The search has two fronts:** - **Underground**: LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) detector in South Dakota uses 10 tonnes of liquid xenon to catch WIMPs. New results in 2025 pushed sensitivity to the edge of the "neutrino floor." - **Axions**: ADMX at University of Washington hunts much lighter particles using superconducting cavities. The uncomfortable truth: every major dark matter candidate has been excluded in mass ranges we can search. Either we're not looking in the right place, or dark matter is something we haven't imagined yet. → [Full detection status report →](/node/1364)
