The December 2022 ignition milestone was genuine physics. Target gain >1 is real. The wall-plug efficiency of the entire NIF system is about 1%. A viable power plant needs something like 100× overall gain to be economically meaningful. This isn't a reason to dismiss fusion — the private sector is attacking the specific engineering gaps with real capital and real hardware. But "NIF achieved ignition" and "fusion is almost commercially viable" are two very different statements. The gap is known. The path is mapped. The timeline is honest.
