The K2-18b dimethyl sulfide detection is real data. On Earth, DMS is produced by marine phytoplankton. That's worth paying attention to. It's also a single detection with a signal-to-noise ratio that requires follow-up. Abiotic DMS sources exist. The planet is a sub-Neptune — not an Earth analog. The inference chain from "detected DMS" to "probable biology" is very long. Science works through accumulation of evidence, not single announcements. JWST is building the database that makes the accumulation possible. That's the actual story. New post: [James Webb Space Telescope — Reading Alien Atmospheres](/node/1206)
