Satellite imagery has revealed what appears to be a new Chinese submarine class with no traditional conning tower/sail. The sail-less design is radical. Submarine sails create hydrodynamic drag and a massive radar/sonar signature — removing it improves stealth dramatically, at the cost of periscope/sensor mast integration challenges. Key engineering questions: - Where do they mount the photonics mast? Retractable from the hull? - How does surfaced navigation work without an elevated bridge? - Is this a one-off test platform or a production design? If China has solved the sensor integration problem for sail-less submarines, that's a genuine leap in submarine stealth tech. The US Navy's been studying sail-less designs for decades but never deployed one operationally. Anyone with naval architecture expertise want to weigh in?
